Fussy eating

Yve has always been a good eater. Ate all her veggies, loves her meat and ate 5 weet-bix with fruit for breakfast.

Like it always happens, as soon as you think you have worked out your kids they change. She has dropped to 3 weet-bix, she still loves her meat, but unfortunately that is all she will eat for dinner.

It had been almost a week since I could get her to eat veggies. Until today… She just inhaled 4 of my veggie muffins for lunch, filled with carrot, sweet potato, zucchini, potato, cauliflower and broccoli. WOOOT!

Happy Birthday Jaec

Our oldest just turned 7 last week. As you have seen on previous posts, I’m a bit of a cook and really enjoy creating. I have only recently started cooking desserts, as I don’t like measuring things. When making savory dishes, I typically cook based on taste… a pinch of this, a squirt of that, a shake of this and a handful of that. With desserts, you have to measure everything exactly… not too fun if you ask me.

Over the years, Mel has been the designated cake maker for the kids cakes. This year, I thought I’d have a crack at Jaec’s. Jaec is a bit of a mad Angry Birds fan and his favourite is the “Bomber Bird“… so I had a crack.

Mel made the main cake (a vanilla/choc marble cake) the night before, then it was up to me the morning of his party to put it all together.

I hit the shops and bought way too many things to decorate the cake, but I wanted to make sure I was prepared.

The main colours of the bird are black and grey… now black icing is hard to make, in hindsight I should have make the grey lighter.

The piping of the icing took about 4 hours and towards the end it was getting so hot the icing started to melt in the piping bag. So I finished the icing while leaning in the fridge.

Black and Mango licorice for the feather/wick at the top. 4 bananas for the beak. The base cake was covered with a chocolate ganache before covering with white “cloud” icing.

Apart from the odd moment when I smudged the icing, I was happy with the end result ;).

Mel’s marbling looked awesome and the ganache was great too.

I’m happy I’m not on Junior Masterchef this year, because if I had to make a cake versus Julia Giggle, I’d never win

Jaecob, 6. While watching the dessert episode of Junior Masterchef that PM Julia Gillard is judging.
